Grand View League, a 29-year-old volunteer fundraising branch of the America Cancer Society is hosting its 2023 Design & Discovery…DEDICATED TO A CURE event this fall at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos. In addition, our 4th Annual Drive for Discovery Golf Tournament, will be held on September 11th at Almaden Golf & Country Club in San Jose.

Drive for Discovery guests will have the opportunity to golf, participate in putting contest, premium tee gift, box lunch, on-course beverages, hosted happy hour and buffet dinner.

In addition, a Silent Auction, Live Auction and Raffle will be offered. We are thrilled to welcome back the voice of the Sharks, Randy Hahn, as our Honorary Chair and Celebrity Golfer.

The Golf Tournament has been held each year in memory of Gayle Newgren, who passed away from cancer in 2019. Gayle was an avid golfer in addition to being a dedicated GVL member. All proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the Grand View League Research Funding Initiative.

Design & Discovery guests will have the opportunity to shop at some of their favorite boutiques from past years as well as new boutiques. The on-site boutiques will be selling jewelry, clothing, handbags and more. Each boutique will donate a portion of its sales to the American Cancer Society.

Guests will be updated on the Grand View League Research Funding Initiative (GVL RFI) launched in 2016. This initiative has funded a cancer research scientist each year since its inception with a total of nine being funded to date. This represents over $1,451,500 raised from friends of Grand View League. Currently, funds are being raised to fund a tenth research grant at this time. The GVL RFI is unique in that 100% of donations to the Initiative go to funding local cancer research. Donors of $1,000. or more are invited to participate in selecting the research grant to be funded.

The American Cancer Society has been involved in nearly every major cancer breakthrough in the last century — from medications that help people live longer and better, to lifesaving cancer screening tests. As the world’s largest private funder of cancer research, the Society supports the best ideas of the brightest researchers, who with each discovery get us closer to a world without cancer. Since awarding its first grant 75 years ago, the Society has awarded over $5 billion to promising investigators.

Grand View League has raised over $17 million in support of the Society in its cancer research and patient services efforts. There are now 50 Nobel Laureates among the Society’s funded researchers. This year marks the 110th birthday of the American Cancer Society. This is a chance for us to reflect on our progress, but even more so to continue our efforts to finish the fight.
